Tech companies are accelerating investments in the AR/VR and metaverse fields these days, and Google is one of them. Google is developing an AR headset, reports US tech media The Verge.

According to The Verge, Google is working on a new AR headset codenamed "Project Iris" with a target launch date of 2024. It's still in early development, so plans are subject to change, but the headset will feature a custom processor developed in-house, much like the Pixel smartphone. Android is expected to be adopted as the OS, but there is also information that an OS is being developed for AR headsets, so it is unknown which one it will be.

The initial prototype being developed has a shape similar to ski goggles. Rumor has it that it will be similar to MR (Mixed Reality), in which images shot with an outward-facing camera are superimposed on AR objects.

Because the battery is installed inside the headset, no external power supply is required. However, it is not known whether it will work standalone, as it is not known whether it will need to be connected to an external device such as a smartphone.

In addition, it seems that there are few things that are known at the moment, such as how to sell the product, and whether the product name will be the Pixel brand, but about 300 people are involved in the development of the headset. A team of people is involved, and hundreds of new employees are expected to be hired in the future.
